Chronic Low Back Pain…Is Spinal Decompression the Answer?

If you suffer from chronic low back pain like many people, you may have tried several different treatments designed to deal with the pain.

An important thing to understand is that in the majority of cases the spinal discs are to blame. Research shows that the disc is the most common cause of back pain followed by the facet joints and the SI joint.

Many people who experience low back pain can’t recall what they did to hurt themselves. This is because the disc is only pain sensitive in the outer 1/3. So as the inner portion of the disc migrates outwards no pain is felt, until the outer pain sensitive zone is contacted. Then pain can come on very quickly and seemingly without cause.

The disc is very susceptible to dehydration and degeneration primarily because if it’s lack of a direct blood supply. It receives it’s vital nutrients and hydration from the bones above and below where a rich blood supply is present. Once the disc becomes damaged the disc loses it’s ability to maintain hydration and it becomes dry and much more likely to deteriorate.

One little known fact about disc pain is that once a disc begins to dry out it becomes more pain sensitive. That’s because certain cells that hold hydration in the disc also inhibit the growth of pain sensitive nerves in the disc. So once a disc drys out painful nerves become more abundant.

The most common treatments for low back pain don’t address this issue. Only one actually increases the amount of hydration into the disc and that is spinal decompression. This treatment accelerates the amount of hydration that goes into the disc so that the disc can regenerate.

Most people will compare simple traction to spinal decompression, however this is not accurate. True spinal decompression is achieved when the normal muscle guarding reflex is overcome to allow negative pressures to be created in the disc. Traction and inversion can’t achieve this.

Spinal decompression creates 2 desirable effects for the disc. One is that is draws in any herniated or bulging material centrally to decrease nerve compression or irritation.And secondly it brings in a fresh supply of nutrition so that the raw materials are present for the disc to heal.
